Copy Editor – Romance Fiction Remote

About the role:

We’re looking for a detail-oriented copy editor to work on novel-length romance books (90,000–100,000 words) in various subgenres. This is a long-term, fully remote position that offers flexibility—you’ll work on your own schedule as long as you meet agreed deadlines and communicate promptly with the team.

You’ll start with individual books on a project-by-project basis, and as you grow familiar with our editing style and processes, you may progress to regular ongoing work (weekly or monthly assignments). This role involves working within a supportive team environment and collaborating closely with editors and writers.

What you’ll do:

Using our online platform, you’ll ensure every element of a story is consistent, cohesive, and complete. Your responsibilities will include:

• Completing two rounds of copy editing with team feedback and revisions between rounds
• Fact-checking all details mentioned in the narrative (data, references, etc.)
• Flagging ambiguous or factually incorrect sentences
• Checking for continuity errors (plot, setting, timeline, character consistency)
• Maintaining and updating a Master Character List as new details emerge
• Correcting typos, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax errors
• Eliminating repetitive wording and removing extra spaces
• Reformatting paragraphs to improve readability
• Ensuring consistent spelling, hyphenation, capitalization, and verb usage
• Editing while preserving the writer’s unique voice
• Handling both first and third person narratives, present and past tense
• Leaving tactful, diplomatic editing comments for writers to review

You’ll work with our editing team to learn our style guidelines and receive constructive feedback on each book, with the goal of working independently by your fourth project. All work will be reviewed and you’ll have opportunities for continued improvement.

Skills/background needed:

• Strong copy editing experience with romance novels (no prior experience necessary—full training provided)
• Ability to spot inconsistencies within scenes and across an entire series
• Excellent research and fact-checking skills
• Familiarity with editing multiple character perspectives and narrative styles
• Willingness to learn and maintain a writer’s voice while editing
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Deadline-driven mindset with ability to respond to communication within 24 hours
• Comfort working in an online shared team environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Track Changes function
• Ability to accept constructive feedback and work collaboratively
• Willingness to cover for other team members when needed

Important requirements:

• You must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement for each project
• All work must be 100% original—AI-generated, AI-assisted, or pre-written template content will not be accepted
• This is an independent contractor position (work-for-hire basis)
• You must be willing to self-edit and proofread all work before submission to ensure it meets high quality standards
• You should have genuine interest in the romance genre and understand our readership
