About this role:
We’re looking for a Community Journalist to attend events, meetings and activities in your local area, interview people, take photographs and write clear, engaging stories that help readers understand what’s happening in their community.
This is a writing and reporting position. You’ll spend time in the field gathering information and then write stories from home. Strong writing ability matters more to us than any formal background in journalism.
What you’ll do:
• Attend assigned community events, meetings and activities
• Take clear, accurate notes and identify the most important information
• Interview community members, organizers, officials and attendees
• Write clear, factual and engaging stories explaining what happened and why it matters
• Capture quality photographs using a camera or smartphone
• Verify facts, names, titles, quotes and details before submitting
• Write photo captions and descriptions
• Meet publication deadlines (typically within 24 hours of an assignment)
• Communicate with the editorial team before and after assignments
• Pitch interesting community stories when you find them
What we’re looking for:
You should be curious, observant and comfortable walking into unfamiliar events to figure out what happened and why readers should care. You notice important details, ask good follow-up questions and get the spelling of names right.

Experience:
No prior journalism experience is required. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Experience with journalism, AP Style, WordPress, interviewing, local government, photography or community reporting is helpful but not necessary.
Types of assignments:
You might cover community meetings, local government, business openings, arts and cultural events, education programs, local sports, nonprofit initiatives, festivals, community profiles or original feature stories.
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
Contract length: Part Time / Freelance
Location: Open to applicants worldwide. Field reporting happens locally; writing can be done from home.
