Roles: You’ll acquire and evaluate book manuscripts, work with authors and subject-matter experts, and help build our publishing programme’s annual catalogue. You’ll assess projects for editorial feasibility, guide authors through revisions, and collaborate across teams to bring books from proposal to publication. Training and support will be provided as you develop expertise in manuscript evaluation and the publishing industry.

Skills/background needed: You’ll need a bachelor’s degree and at least four years of book acquisitions or publishing experience (or a master’s degree with two years of experience). Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects are essential. You should be comfortable working independently, negotiating with authors and colleagues, and thinking critically about editorial and financial considerations. Experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook is required. Familiarity with scholarly publishing, current industry trends, and database management is a plus, though full training will be provided.

You’ll be part of a collaborative publishing team that evaluates 20–25 book manuscripts annually across scholarly and general-interest fields. Your day-to-day work includes soliciting and reviewing proposals, securing peer reviewers, preparing materials for editorial board review, guiding authors through the revision process, and assessing costs to keep projects on budget. You’ll also participate in seasonal planning, identify funding opportunities for projects, and maintain strong working relationships across editorial, production, marketing, and business departments.
