Role: General Assignment Reporter

Contract length: Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week

About the role:

We’re looking for an enthusiastic reporter to join our news team. In this role, you’ll cover local community news, including stories about local businesses, economic developments, politics, and the people who make your area unique. You’ll work on a mix of breaking news and longer feature stories, with the opportunity to tell stories that resonate with readers.

This is a hands-on position where you’ll develop relationships with community sources, conduct interviews, take detailed notes, and craft engaging news articles. You’ll also work on stories for social media and digital platforms. Weeknight and weekend assignments are part of the job.

What we’re looking for:

You should be a strong, clear writer with excellent interviewing skills and genuine curiosity about your community. You’re organized, detail-oriented, and able to work under deadline pressure. You’re flexible and willing to take on stories across different beats as needed. You can accept feedback from editors and use it to improve your work.

Essential skills and requirements:

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office. Ability to take effective notes and draft organized news articles. Strong attention to detail. Ability to build professional relationships with sources. Own transportation required. Familiarity with AP style is strongly preferred.

Nice to have (but not required):

Experience writing longer feature stories or personal narratives. Experience sharing news on social media platforms. Basic experience with photography, video, or content design.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience preferred. Entry-level candidates welcome to apply.
