Freelance Travel Writer – Work From Home

You will be responsible for creating original travel stories about outdoor destinations in support of a new travel platform. As one of the first writers on the team, you will help build the content library that launches the platform, working directly with the founders to pitch and develop assignments while helping shape the editorial voice from day one.

Responsibilities:

Develop story ideas and work with the team to build an approved topic list before each assignment

Travel to locations and report stories firsthand

Write original articles on family-friendly and budget-friendly outdoor activities, hiking guides, parks, wildlife viewing, seasonal events, and day trips

Produce practical, service-focused stories that help readers plan trips, including details on access, cost, timing, difficulty, and seasonality

Deliver clean, accurate copy on agreed deadlines

Revise pieces through the review and approval process

Supply supporting photography where possible

Contribute ideas on coverage gaps, seasonal timing, and topics worth pursuing as the platform grows

Skills/background needed:

Strong familiarity with outdoor destinations you will cover, including trails, parks, seasons, and local conditions

Willingness and ability to travel to locations and report stories in person

A clear, warm, and useful writing voice

Strong time management and ability to work independently

Your own transportation and gear for travel assignments

Travel writing experience with published samples is a plus, as are photography skills, familiarity with local conservation organizations, and experience writing for digital platforms

Contract length: Freelance, per-article basis with potential for growth

Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application

Location: Open to applicants worldwide

This role begins as freelance, per-article work with genuine opportunities for growth. As the platform expands, there will be potential for additional assignments, expanded coverage areas, and ongoing columns. Once launched, the platform will need content moderators and community moderators, and the team prioritises promoting from writers who already know the platform and its standards. While a full-time role cannot be guaranteed at this stage, strong contributors in the early months will be the first considered for expanded opportunities.
