We’re seeking a creative Outline Writer to develop detailed story outlines in the fantasy romance genre. You’ll work on a flexible freelance basis, creating compelling plots and character arcs that form the foundation for novels.
This is a remote, independent contractor position where you’ll collaborate with a creative team on outline development, character creation, and plot structure. You’ll have the flexibility to work on your own schedule while meeting agreed deadlines and maintaining prompt communication.
About the role:
In this position, you will:
• Write detailed book outlines from concept to completion (approximately 20,000 words per outline, supporting 90,000–110,000-word novels)
• Develop engaging characters with depth, emotional wounds, and realistic internal conflicts
• Create satisfying romantic arcs that feel earned and emotionally resonant
• Use single and alternating point-of-view techniques with original plot twists
• Demonstrate knowledge of popular fantasy romance tropes, trends, and reader expectations
• Build immersive fantasy worlds with consistent lore, mythology, and world logic
• Ensure plot coherence, spotting discrepancies within outlines and across series
• Research and document relevant fantasy details to maintain believability
• Collaborate with team members through an online platform, accepting and providing constructive feedback
• Work independently while remaining open to creative suggestions and revisions
• Self-edit and proofread all work before submission
Skills and experience needed:
• Proven experience writing story outlines for fantasy romance novels
• Strong understanding of story structure, character development, and plot pacing
• Familiarity with fantasy romance tropes, character archetypes, and genre conventions
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to research and fact-check details accurately
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function
• Strong self-editing and proofreading abilities
• Reliability in meeting deadlines and responding to messages within 24 hours
• Willingness to read and familiarize yourself with existing series material to maintain continuity
• Ability to accept feedback professionally and adapt work as needed
• Active reader of contemporary fantasy romance
• All work must be 100% original—no AI-generated, AI-assisted, pre-written templates, or resold content
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
