Content Writer – Media Relations Entry Level

About This Role

We’re looking for a talented writer to join our communications team. You’ll write and edit content across multiple formats — from feature stories and news pieces to social media posts and web copy. You’ll also support media relations by responding to inquiries, coordinating interviews, and helping shape how our organization is represented in the media.

This is a full-time, on-site position in a fast-paced, collaborative newsroom-style environment where you’ll work alongside editors, designers and digital strategists to tell compelling stories across print, web, social and video.

What You’ll Do

Writing & Content Creation

Write and edit news content, feature stories, profiles and institutional narratives. Create copy for a wide range of communications including news releases, marketing and advertising materials, internal communications and presentations. Interview sources to develop original, accurate and compelling stories. Apply Associated Press style and house editorial standards to all written work.

Media Relations & Reputation

Respond to media inquiries, coordinate interview requests, and draft statements and talking points. Serve as a professional point of contact for journalists. Monitor news coverage and flag emerging stories and opportunities. Help protect and build our reputation with both internal and external audiences through consistent, accurate messaging. Support the organization’s response to time-sensitive communications by drafting clear content quickly.

Multi-Channel Adaptation

Adapt stories across mediums — print, web, social and video — tailoring tone and length to fit each platform and audience. Write web and social copy with an understanding of how content performs online. Draft scripts and copy for video, podcasts and emerging storytelling formats.

Editorial Collaboration

Partner with communications leadership to develop story ideas and editorial strategy. Collaborate with colleagues in design, digital strategy and social media to ensure stories are told cohesively across every channel. Work closely with staff and campus partners to identify newsworthy stories and ensure accuracy. Contribute to brainstorming for major storytelling initiatives and campaigns.

Editorial Standards

Adapt your writing tone for different audiences while maintaining a consistent organizational voice. Fact-check and proofread all content for accuracy and clarity. Stay current on trends in journalism and digital storytelling, bringing fresh ideas to the team. Use generative AI tools responsibly for research, brainstorming and drafting support where appropriate.

Skills & Background Needed

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or a related field. 5 or more years of professional writing and editing experience, ideally in journalism, organizational communications or content marketing. Proven expertise in Associated Press style, feature writing and news writing. Experience supporting media relations — responding to reporter inquiries, drafting statements and representing an organization under deadline pressure. Ability to write effectively across multiple formats — print, web, social, video and advertising. Understanding of how content performs across digital and social platforms. Comfort with generative AI tools and their responsible use in writing workflows. Strong interviewing skills and ability to build trust quickly with diverse sources. Collaborative instincts with ability to give and receive constructive feedback. Exceptional attention to detail and fact-checking skills. Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Contract Length: Permanent full-time

Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.

Location: On-site position.

What We’re Looking For

We value professionalism, respect and collaboration. We’re looking for someone who is curious, creative and a good listener. We appreciate people who approach challenges as problem-solvers and care about the quality and accuracy of their work.

Application Requirements

Please submit a resume, cover letter and writing samples (a mix of long-form and short-form/digital work is preferred) as a single PDF.
